![]() If the lead wire is good and it does not go to full-scale the gauge is bad.ĬAUTION- Do not leave the gauge grounded and the ignition on, it can short out the gauge windings and destroy the gauge. If it does not go full scale check the lead wire to the gauge for continuity. With the gauge grounded and the ignition switch on the gauge should go full scale. The gauges can be checked in the vehicle by grounding the yellow wire for the fuel gauge and the white wire with red tracer at the temperature sending unit for the temperature gauge. If it does not move or go full scale the gauge is defective. 1963 Ford Thunderbird, Thunderbird 1963 Cars and Trucks, Water Temp Gauges for Ford Mustang, Fuel Tanks for Ford Thunderbird, Ford Thunderbird Cars, 1957 Ford Thunderbird, 1963 Ford Falcon, 1955 Ford Thunderbird, 1956 Ford Thunderbird Additional site navigation. You can access it by removing the clock/windshield wiper panel. You should see the gauges go all the way over to H or F. If it doesn’t, then the problem exists in the gauge or wiring. You can test the gauges by grounding the wires. If it does, suspect the sending unit as the faulty component. ![]() Check to see if the gauge moves from the rest position (Hot) to the left of the cold position. Hold them until the gauge needle goes full scale from its power off position. Touch the wire from the sending unit to ground, for not longer than ten seconds. It doesn’t make any difference which terminals are used, the gauge or battery can be turned either way. The fuel gauge never has read full (only about 3/4 on a full tank). Use a good 6 Volt lantern battery and hold the terminals of the gauge to the terminals on the battery. Bill - after about 5 minutes of idling, the temp gauge went to just past the T in 'TEMP'. Can the sender be bad or possible a defective 62 yr old temp. ![]() Doesnt seem like the engine is overheating, water level is always good too. Now the temp gauge goes almost to the hot setting after a short drive. The procedure is the same for 1955, 1956 & 1957 gauges. Temp gauge didnt work at all until I replaced the temp sensor in the block. It is very simple to check the temperature and fuel gauges that have been removed from the instrument cluster.
